Francesco Laera

Ph.D. | Research Assistant | Member of VR3 Group

Francesco Laera is researcher at the Polytechnic University of Bari. He received his Ph.D in Mechanical and Management Engineering at the Politecnico di Bari. In 2016 he received his Master’s Degree with honor and recommendation for publication in Graphic of System at ISIA Urbino; graduated with honors in 2014 in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Bari, Bachelor’s Degree. His current research is focused on the development of an Augmented Reality Graphical User Interface (GUI) to assist the user during nautical navigation, both sailing and maritime. He developed a specific nautical Augmented Reality application to assist sailors of all ages and experiences, to improve safety and accessibility. He studies current tools used in sailing, patents and reviewed 414 AR nautical scientific papers using the systematic review method. He listed a total of 156 nautical variables to derive a ranking of the most important variables to visualize to develop a graphical interface with a limited amount of information. He’s working on an AR navigation interface for navigation developed and validated in VR on a sailboat. This study also goes beyond sailing, extending this research to other fields and applications such as aeronautics and land navigation.
