abstract = {Transport is a priority issue for a sustainable development. Freight
transportation is a key component of all the supply chain and logistics systems.
In EU27, 31,030 persons were killed in road incident in 2010 (EU, 2012);
urban outdoor air pollution is estimate to cause 1.3 million deaths worldwide
per year (WHO, 2011); transport is responsible for around a quarter of EU
greenhouse gas emission (EU, 2011); many people are exposed to high
transport noise levels that affect their quality of life and health. These are
examples of external costs generated by transport users but not paid by them. In
the attempt to reduce the environmental costs of transport, EU public decision
makers recognised the need to charge the external costs according to a ‘user
pays’ and ‘polluter pays’ principle to drive supply chain decision makers
towards sustainable choices. In order to achieve EU targets, more severe public
regulations will be adopted in the near future in EU Countries. Traditional
inventory models minimise logistics costs neglecting externalities. The aim of
this paper is to evaluate the benefits of the internalisation of the external costs
in a classical logistic problem, the inventory management problem. In order to
do this, in this paper the sustainable order quantity model (Digiesi et al., 2012)
has been adopted. The model allows identifying (in case of a deterministic
product demand and lead time) the optimal lot-size and transportation mean
which minimise logistic costs (holding, ordering and transport), as well as
external costs of transport. Finally, a sensitivity analysis has been performed in
order to investigate the effects of different internalisation strategies of external
costs on the solution of the inventory problem. In order to evaluate the
effectiveness of the proposed strategies, they have been tested on a real case
study.},

abstract = {Energy production from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste is widely recognized as a social and environmental opportunity, since it allows reducing waste disposal and making waste management economically profitable. However, profitability of these plants is strongly affected by the quantity and the quality of wastes, as well as by the availability of local subsidies. The key role of incentive policies in the economic success of investments in biomass to energy plants is highly recognised and has led EU governments to promote the deployment of these plants. Incentive policies adopted in EU countries differ significantly. In this paper, an evaluation model based on cost-benefit analysis is developed in order to identify the production-based incentive rates making investments in anaerobic digestion plant economically feasible without reducing social and environmental positive impacts. The model has been applied to the case of energy production plants from anaerobic digestion of cattle manure. In order to investigate the influence of the plant size on the investment profitability, different waste collection areas have been considered. Environmental performances of the plants have been evaluated by adopting a life cycle assessment approach. Results obtained confirm the environmental benefits achievable through the energy production from the anaerobic digestion of cattle manure. However, the current production-based incentive rates provided in most EU Countries revealed an inadequate balance between private and public interest, since they make profitable the investments only in case of small plants.},

However, for many years the influence of human behavior on production system performance has been underestimated and a lot of unrealistic assumptions have been used to simplify the human component modeling. Nowadays, population aging is acknowledged as a global trend. Among individual factors impacting on workers’ performance, high attention is being paid to the age from scientific community, policy-makers and business leaders. In this paper, demographic aspects and their implications on workforce composition are illustrated; successively, main findings on age-related performance characteristics are summarized. The authors propose an age-related model which aims to find optimal job rotation schedules in work environments characterized by low load manual tasks with a high frequency of repetition (e.g. assembly lines). The model is an integer programming model allowing for the maximization of the overall system performance jointly reducing and balancing human workloads and ergonomic risk within acceptable limits. A numerical example is proposed.},
